Non-religious Amazing Grace

Here's a holiday song for the secular. Many of us think the tune of "Amazing Grace" is lovely but we don't happen to agree with the message. This version is for all us religion-free people. The next time you hear what you think sounds like "Amazing Grace", it just might be "Let Go Of Faith" instead. :)

A one-page .PDF sheet of my "Amazing Grace"/"Let Go Of Faith" tabs is posted here:

"Let Go Of Faith"

Let go of 'faith'

It's truth we need.

And 'faith' steps in the way.

From birth to grave

We must seek truth

Or live as haunted slaves.

If you claim you know

You don't learn more

There is always more to know

As we live and love

And work for peace

Seeking truth is how we grow.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

A holiday song for the secular?

Oh, you mean like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", "Jingle Bells", "Frosty The Snowman", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Winter Wonderland", "The Twelve Days of Christmas", "Jolly Ol' Saint Nicholas", "Let It Snow", "Merry Little Christmas", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silver Bells", "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas", "Oh Christmas Tree", "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Carol of the Bells", "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire", "Deck The Halls", "Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer", "It's A Holly Jolly Christmas", "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", "Jingle Bell Rock" and more?

"Amazing Grace" isn't a "Holiday Song", it's a hundreds year old hymn written by John Newton. Go here http://www.anointedlinks.com/amazing_grace.html to read a short biography on him and his inspiration for the beautiful song. You'll see it's not just a typical "religious" song, but something far more moving and profound. This particular melody was sung by the slaves in the South, as a song of hope.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

Thank you logicalkitty for defending the faith and providing a very informative history lesson.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

I am not religious at all.

Being creative is great, and creating a song about not being religious is one thing, but to change a deep religious song to fit your own beliefs is kind of wrong.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

Perfect setup I guess - enslave a group of people and then impose religious doctrine that riddles them with guilt and keeps them ignorant. Let them sing pretty songs to ease the pain of their existence.

Hope? for what that their christian captors would go easy on them, not rape them, beat them or sell off their family members.

God is Santa Claus for adults. One of the tragic things about Slavery is how deeply religious it made black people. The condition of slavery is sanctioned in the bible and is proof positive how full of crap christians are. I say take it all back, secularist have had long enough to screw up the world...imagine how far we would be had the dark ages not destroyed science in order to codify christianity.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

^^^ You are why the Internet is fun in many different ways.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

this is as hypocritical as an "atheist church"...believe what you will, but neither side should attack one another with such angst and bigotry...its sad that someone would turn something so deep and meaningful like this into a backwards and insulting attack.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

"secularists have had long enough to screw up the world" I love stupid people! Someone needs to learn what Secular means before they make posts. Or did you deliberately contradict your argument? And yes, it's Christianity's fault that the Dark Ages occurred. It had nothing to do with the (pagan, or at least mostly pagan) barbarians who destroyed the Western Roman Empire. No, the wise men of Europe came together and said, "We're going to take a break from science for a while and focus in on Jesus. I think that's what's important." Increased faith was a side effect of the Dark Ages, not the cause. Welcome to the internet. Prick.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

Oh, and to the OP... First of all, Amazing Grace is not a holiday song. Secondly, a "secular holiday song" is oxymoronic. Holiday=Holy Day. Yes, I know the meaning has changed over the centuries, but still. And what "secular holiday" do you propose your little ditty be associated with? It's not the fact that you're an atheist that annoys me. I have no problems with atheists. It's the fact that you accuse the religious of ignorance while you wallow in stupidity. Atheism is not a free pass out of knowledge. Just because you deny the existence of God doesn't make you any smarter than anyone else, as I your post so clearly demonstrates. Any atheist with half a brain probably hates people like you. You drag the cause down as much as any head-up-his-anus fundamentalist drags down Christianity. Save what dignity you have and just get out. Again, welcome to the internet. Prick.

Re: Non-religious Amazing Grace

I have nothing at all against any other religion, philosophy, or anything like that, even atheism. It's just these anti-theist a-holes that constantly go on forums, blogs, etc. that preach against religion and call it ignorance. I hope you've noticed, you're calling nearly 85% of the world ignorant slaves. Why can't you be like most atheists, and not talk about your religious motives unless deliberately asked? Don't try to impose your beliefs on someone who thinks differently. And any Christian or atheist who can define the word "moral" can tell you that.

FREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M NOT FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU NEED SERIOUS HELP IF YOU'RE GONNA ACTUALLY TRY TO PUBLICIZE THAT SICK AND DEMENTED SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU NEED GOD FIRST OF ALL!!!!! WEIRDO!!!!!!! THAT'S NOT EVEN ATHEST!!!!!!! YOU'RE BASICALLY SAYING YOU HATE GOD!!!!!!!!!!

They are all religious songs though?

Sorry but... isn't any song about 'Christmas' (Christ the Christian/Catholic/Jewish God/Savior/Prophet/Whatever, and Mass as in a gathering of people within the faith as, both seem to be religious things, although I guess Mass could be interpreted as otherwise) a religious song?

Sorry LogicalKitty, but here I don't count a single one of those songs you posted as secular at all, as they all speak of the christian holiday of christmas. Also, saying Amazing Grace is a Hymn, then saying it's not a 'Holy Day' song seems kind of contradictory, although I suppose you're under the impression the rest of us consider the 'holiday' the OP was referring to to be christmas, when I don't see where that was stated at all.

Honestly, if you were truly Atheist, you wouldn't celebrate christmas as such. Perhaps if you really felt you MUST due to society's norms creating a kind of social obligation for gift giving and the like, you'd say something for x-mas, but still...

Oh, and to the one who posted that the OP was a freak because they don't believe what they do, congratulation, what a great show of religious tolerance.... (Yes.. that was sarcasm. I feel I should point it out as judging by your post, I'm not so sure you'd 'Get' that)

I don't know what to say

I don't know what to say, I realize this is an old thread there aren't very many new posts... but we've got some people recommending that atheist's use the term X-mas, even though X is written identically to the Greek letter 'chi' and is the first letter of Christos which is Christ in Greek and so X-mas is not irreligious.

We've got other people being thankful that the dark ages squelched a lot of Christians when in fact it was the Catholic monasticism that preserved education in western Europe during those times.

We've got other people telling us that terms like morality are actually definable when in fact anyone with a basic understanding of Socrates knows that you can't define such opinionated words.

And mostly we have a heated and childish debate between two factions of people that are both born and bred in one small sliver of time and space whose only experience with 'Christianity' has actually been with that of Western Evangelical Protestantism, not the ancient faith of Christ.

This song is just plain distasteful

X-mas is still the shorthand for Christmas. The "X" is an old Greek letter that was the first letter of how they spell Christ.

About the song, this is nothing but a parody. No serious atheist would ever want to hear that. It has no substance and is simply garbage that should not be payed much attention to. Don't post this trash on a site for musical notes.

The original song is a classic that people of all beliefs can enjoy listening to. It has substance and while its meaning is surely Christian in nature, it's still a good song by any standard.

Reading this thread is

Reading this thread is hysterical! I love those of you defending the "Christianity" of this tune... and although the words that are now popular were written by John Newton, the tune itself it much older and probably had nothing to do with Christianity.

I'm hoping they used to sing raunchy lyrics to it right before a big orgy! LOL

And btw, to the self appointment Christian historian (I can't remember the name of the person and bothering to look is just a waste of my time) here in the group... oh , this is too funny... but back "in Jesus's day" (ie. when he lived) there were no "Christians", Jesus was a Jew, and so were most of his followers.... you're too funny. Christianity was imposed on the Romans as a war tactic... wow... lots of love there, eh?

Grow up .. it's a great tune and a favorite I play in church all the time.... but get over yourselves... the tune was usurped cause it fits the words!

dude

you said this was non religis this this isent evan athiesism this is saying you hate god ima christian and this is offencive if there is a way to take this peice fo crap down do it you idiot or rename it the moran song
