iPhone Earbud Use/ Mouth Piece Idea

Hello,

This post is going to talk about two things: (1) cool use of the iPhone Earbuds, and (2) an idea that I got because of number 1.

(1) Earbuds

So, recently I have been using my iPhone earbuds with the ocarina app. I've found a lot of cool things that you can do with these earbuds that have the mic attatched.

What I do is plug them into the phone and put the mic in the corner of my mouth in such a way that the mic is triggered when I breath both out and in! This has allowed me to get a more consistent sound because the mic doesn't move around and I can keep playing by breathing in and out so I don't have to stop to breath. I have also found that separating different notes is a bit more distinct with the mic in the corner of your mouth like this.

Give it a try and see what you think!

WARNING: I am not sure if this will put the mic of the earbuds in risk of damage or not. I haven't had any problems, but I would only try it knowing that there is a possible risk.

(2) Mouth Piece Idea

The thing with the earbuds gave me an idea for an accessory for the iPhone and ocarina like apps. They could make an attachment that plugs into the headphone/mic plug and comes around to a mouth piece that would have a mic in it. They could arrange the mic in such a way that it is still triggered by breathing either direction. Also it can have another open headphone plug so that you can either send the sound to speakers/a computer/ headphones.

I think this would help remove the problem of "shaky" notes that fade in and out when you don't want them too; give you something to stay more "connected" to the instrument; and again, provide a way to play rather continuously!

I was also thinking the attatchment could add something to be able to "feel" the holes without inhibiting the app, like a raised ring around the holes or something...

Tell me what you think and if you have any other ideas or any idea on how we might be able to get someone to make this!

Re: iPhone Earbud Use/ Mouth Piece Idea

yeah i found out myself that with iphone earbuds you can't blow into the actual iphone (me dummy)

so with that i found out that if you put your headphones on, then loop the cord around your left ear ,the mic will actually fit in your mouth and your still able to blow in and out and play with out any problems. except that i have been sitting at my desk at work with people walking by giving me strange looks.

but hey they wish they had an iphone......so there.

Re: iPhone Earbud Use/ Mouth Piece Idea

You thought putting it in your mouth earned you funny looks from others, you should have seen my wife when she found me testing it out in my nostril. :?

That's golden, CADmasterJ, just plain golden.

How did that work out, the mic up the nose thing?

Re: iPhone Earbud Use/ Mouth Piece Idea

On the Stairway to Heaven video (http://tinyurl.com/5u3h7d), it appears that the guy in white with the headband on is blowing into something attached to the iPhone. I just downloaded the Ocarina app yesterday and really want to learn "The Inner Light" which I love but found that blowing into the microphone port is a bit inconsistent and could use an alternative way to play my Ocarina on the iPhone. Any ideas as to what he is using here?
